The Limhamn Chess Club is proud to invite the players, the chess audience, the media and the sponsors to the 19th annual Sigeman Chess Tournament. The tournament will take place at the classical Hipp Theater in central Malmo, for the fourteenth time. As in the previous year, six players play each other in a round-robin tournament.
Last year's winner, 16-year-old Dutchman Anish Giri, will be defending his title, but he will have to work hard to hold off one of the established top names within chess, 39-year-old Alexei Shirov. These two are challenged by 17-year-old Philippine player Wesley So, one of the new rising stars in chess.
This year's home team consists of Jonny Hector from hosting club Limhamns SK, who participates in the Sigeman Chess Tournament for the fifteenth time, and two newly promoted grandmaster, Nils Grandelius and Hans Tikkanen, both from neighboring city Lund. The home team will probably have a hard time and if one of them ends up in the top three it will be a good result.
What makes this year's tournament extra interesting is that all players are extremely attack oriented. Shirov is known for always trying to win all games but none of the others are exactly known for playing quick draws. The arrangers hope that this will give the audience five exciting rounds, both those watching the tournament live and in the commentator room, and those watching the live games on the Internet.
We would also like to thank the law firm Sigeman & Co, Sandvik Mining and Construction, PWC, Odd Hill, Golden Dragon Trading and Consulting, the arranging club Limhamns SK, all other sponsors and all others who once again have contributed to making this traditional chess event come true.
Once again, welcome to the 19th annual Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament!
